Attelabus nitens

Oak roller weevil

Description

Adults are generally small (4.0-6.5 mm) red beetle with the black head. It creates barrel-like hard to be interchanged container for its young. It cuts the leaf transversely across the middle to the central rib, working first from one side then the other. It folds together the two quarters nearer the tip over the midrib and then rolls them into a double thickness tube , in which it lays 1-3 eggs. The larva develops inside the container. In autumn, the containers fall down on the ground, the larva overwinters in them and in spring it pupates. Damage is usually not extensive.
