Cynipid gall wasp Cynips quercusfolii

Description

The gall is about 15-25 mm in zize, small ball-like, found on the bottom side of the leaf. The inside is soft and spongy. The gall surface is smooth, if it occurs on Quercus robur, or rough, if it occurs on Quercus petraea. The colour of the gall varies from yellowish green to red. The fully developed small wasp overwinters inside the gall and leaves it in spring.
