Fusarium subglutinans

Fusarium subglutinans

Description

This worldwide pathogen occurs in USA, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, etc. where it causes pitch canker in Monterey pine (P. radiata) with severe economic impact. In Europe it lives on larch. The infection gateways may be natural injuries such as aphid sucking, hailstorm damage, etc. The spores, formed in orange clusters on the bark, are spread by wind or rain splash. The inner bark tissue perishes prematurely, before the needles develop fully. Longitudinal cracks appear on the bark of stem and twigs. Roots are intact.
