Description
European elm scale live on branches and trunks of elm trees. It is an insect, that belongs to the Hemiptera: Eriococcidae. It is a native European species, which is quite widespread in forest stands and also parks and ornamental gardens. Females, about 2 mm in size, lay eggs on tree trunks, from which small, difficult-to-see larvae hatch during the summer. Brown colour scale is surrounded by a very distinct white waxy fringe around its body. Around 1885, This species has been introduced from Europe to the USA, where it spreads very quickly, and it is considered as an important pest of elm trees.
