Panellus mitis
Elastic oysterling
Description
The elastic oysterling is a small fungus with an oystershaped fruiting body, aromatic fruity odour and mild taste. The caps are very tough and occur from autumn, surviving till spring. They are laterally off-set and form tiers 2 cm across. The gills are white and rather dense. The stipe is white, lateral and very short, sometimes even absent. The fungus grows scattered on coniferous branches and twigs in saprophytic populations, so it does not affect living trees. White rot is caused by its mycelium.
