Panellus serotinus

Late fall oyster

Description

Late fall oyster is a small fungus with scallop-shell fruiting bodies, fragrant fruity aroma and with a mild flavor. The fruiting bodies are very stiff, occurring from autumn and living through to spring. The cap is lateral, protruding. In the wet season it is also olive green and so it is reminiscent of oyster mushroom not only in shape but also in colour. Gills are white, relatively thick. The stem is also white, lateral and very short to nonexistent. The fungus grows as a saprophyte on dead trunks and stumps of broadleaves, thus it does not cause disease of living trees. The mycelium causes white rot of attacked wood.
