Phyllopertha horticola

Garden chafer

Description

A tiny chafer, about 10-12 mm long. It swarms towards the end of May and in June, at higher altitudes even later. The grubs live in the soil, where they feed on plant roots. Adult beetles damage leaves of some broadleaved species by their maturation feeding. On the leaves occur perforations, the veinlets mostly remain intact. It is harmful especially in forest nurseries and at higher altitudes. The generation is annual. It is one of  the commonest chafers in Europe.
