European rosette willow gall midge

Description

Oviposition of this species causes the rose-like growth of infected willow shoots. As the leaves continue to grow, a characteristic \"rose\" is formed at the tip of the shoot. The gall consists of from 30 to 60 leaves, a diameter reaches 30-50 mm. Inside lives the small larva of the pest, which is about 4-5 mm long. The species has one generation per year. The cluster of leaves retains its shape also in winter and leaves do not fall off.
