Strongylogaster multifasciata

Sawfly Strongylogaster multifasciata

Description

The feeding gallery in the bark of older pines is excavated by a small hymenoptera larva. The larva is about 11-18 mm long. At first, it feeds on fern leaves Dryopteris filix-mas and Pteridium aquilinum, later on pine bark creating a typical feeding gallery which never reaches the living part of phloem or wood. The species is common in some parts of Europe, mainly in warmer pine woods with fern in undergrowth.
